Let's Talk About... Social Media For Your Indie Film
A vital part of your marketing mix for your indie film is social media. But how do you make the most out of it and build your audience? This post gets into the nuts & bolts of social & where to start.
Social media is a HUGE component of building your film’s audience and allows you an incredible opportunity to get your message directly into the feeds of millions of people.
But as you may have discovered, not only is it a huge component of your marketing mix, it’s also a huge time commitment. Building a following online is not an easy task, especially for an independent film.
It’s taken me YEARS to build up my film’s account on Instagram and it’s still an ongoing process! Check it out here and please connect with me via social media!
Plus, there’s all of the different platforms and ways to create and share content, not to mention all of the skillsets you need to develop in order to do this (writing, editing, some graphic design, video editing, photography, sound)… OMG.
Yet again, you’re a one-man band!
It’s so overwhelming!
Managing your film’s social media is a full-time job and isn’t one a lot of people want to do. This is why so many filmmakers aren’t adept at it: they just want to make FILMS, darn it!
Yes, I know. See this past post to learn why that’s not enough anymore.
This is also why social media and community managers get paid so well! They are hustling all the time and are ON. Engagement is key.
But if you don’t have the budget to pay someone else to do this service for you, someone on your team is going to have to do it, and most usually that job is going to fall to you, Indie Filmmaker.
But take heart!
This post is designed to help you get your social media strategy off on the right foot so by the time you’re ready to launch your film, you have a bonafide audience ready and waiting for your product, which can ONLY help you in your quest for distribution.
In this post we’ll cover a lot of groundwork such as HOW to get followers without paying for them, whether or not you should set up a Business Account or a Creator Account and MUCH more, but we’re going to start with some of the basics first: WHEN do you start your social media?
Okay, let’s dive in!
