How We Launched a Successful VOD Release for an LGBTQI+ Indie Film from New Zealand w/an Integrated Marketing & PR Plan
It was a combination of reviews, press, four-walling and impact/grassroots marketing coupled with a distributor who believed in the film. Here's how it happened!
Apologies to all for not posting last week - we took a much-needed mini break after wrapping the shoot in New Mexico (can’t wait to tell you about that one!) and Alex is already off to go DP the next film in Reno. I’m going to do a post about trying to maintain work-life balance soon… when I get the time.
I had the pleasure of working with an incredibly heartfelt LGBTQIA movie earlier this year called MYSTERIOUS WAYS, from New Zealand director Paul Oremland.
I was hired to help bring attention to the film after it was picked up by a US distributor and rack up reviews to support its release on VOD.
We had an incredibly successful campaign over the four months we worked together (again, PR takes time!) including two pieces of press in the trades and a litany of consumer-facing press, reviews and podcast interviews. We also worked with a number of nonprofits in our outreach to support the launch.
All of this culminated into an SVOD deal with a specialty streamer, profiling in the trades at Cannes, and a successful grass-roots campaign that helped bring the title to audiences around the globe.
The strategy was a mix of things and culminated in an extremely successful launch. It’s important to plan for marketing and PR in advance of your film’s release and budget for it as well. Many filmmakers leave this step as an afterthought and truly it’s so critical. Without a well-timed marketing and PR campaign for your film or project, you’re doing yourself an enormous disservice and leaving things to chance but more on that later.
In the meantime, here’s how we made it happen for Mysterious Ways.
