Formatting for the Barbie Script: How Did They Format So Many Characters with the SAME Name?
This week is a short post & free to all my readers: I've got my hands full with THREE festivals right now and on-boarding some incredible new clients and their films. More on those star-players later.
Hello readers! It’s a bit of a short post this week as I am deep into my festival screening at Slamdance, and I plan on doing a thorough wrap-up report for you but I wanted to get SOMETHING posted this week.
I was recently sent the BARBIE script from Greta Gerwig and I skimmed through it (I don’t have time to pleasure read, ATM!) but I am a big proponent of reading other scripts for formatting and general guidance.
One of the burning questions I had after watching the movie was how did they format all of Barbies with the same name on the script?
Take a look to see how it was done:
I’m not sure I would have led with Barbie as the first name when doing the draft of the script, but then again, they didn’t have the movie cast yet. Perhaps this was a polish that they did before releasing the script out into the wild (it IS FYC and Award Season after all) but if I was drafting this, I might have led with another descriptor before Barbie, as they all start with “B” and that would have made formatting a nightmare, for me at any rate.
But I like how it was done and think this is a good representation of how to write multiple characters with the same name.
What do you think?
